Why an MCP server

Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets a coding agent call tools you approve. A transcript MCP server exposes one capability — “get the transcript of this video” — as a tool. Claude Code can then read a talk, a bug walkthrough or a tutorial and act on it without you copy-pasting text.

Wiring it into Claude Code

Register the server in your MCP configuration with the API base URL and your key, then confirm the tools appear in the client. Keep the key in an environment variable rather than the config file so it is never committed.

Prompts that work

Agents do best when you name the video and the goal: “fetch the transcript for this URL, summarise the three main arguments, and cite timestamps”. Because the transcript arrives as structured segments, the agent can quote exact moments instead of paraphrasing from memory.

Guardrails worth keeping

Transcripts are untrusted input. Treat video text as data, not instructions, and keep tool output bounded — long transcripts should be chunked or summarised before they hit the context window. Rate-limit the tool to protect your credits.
